Club Bio – Houghton Archers

We are a friendly archery club based in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear.

We welcome everyone, whether you are a seasoned pro fresh from competing with Team GB or an absolute beginner who thinks a pressure button is something you push when it all gets too much.

We were formed on the 31st August 2012 and although we are relatively new we have a good membership base and a good mix of abilities. We have a committee who are dedicated to making Houghton Archers a successful and friendly environment. Whether you want to come and just shoot for the fun of it or wish to start competing against archers from other clubs across the UK, then our coaches are more then happy to help you to try and achieve the level you wish.

We shoot at indoors at Houghton Sports and Wellness Centre on Monday evenings from6pm – 8pm, and at Kepier School on Friday evenings from 7pm – 9pm.

We also have an outdoor venue at Houghton Colliery Welfare Cricket Club, Leyburn Grove.

County Barcodes

The barcodes that were shared at January’s meeting have been updated with the feedback that was received.

The (file removed) now includes a link if the title bar is clicked at the bottom of the document.
It is intended that the Team Selection document would be displayed at any clubs own venue where archers can follow these links in order to be considered for inclusion in the County Team.
The barcode for Expense Claims could also be displayed at the club’s venue. Those persons who are entitled to make claims would be sent a one time access code in order to submit their request.
The Judge Request and Danage Booking barcodes should be made available to the clubs Tournament Organiser.
The Tournament Account Form should also be made available to the clubs Tournament Organiser if the club is hosting an event on behalf of the County. Please do not use this resource if the event is not held on behalf of the County.
All of these shortcut codes are now live and should only be used for “real” events and not test events.
Any clubs who already have events in the calendar and require Judges or Danage Hire should use these from now in order to secure the resources required for their event.

Senior Coaching Day

On Saturday 4th February 26 archers and 13 coaches came together for a day of coaching and development. Archers were able to receive 1:1 coaching to improve their technique, with some having specific things they wanted to work on.
There were also a number of workshops available throughout the day. A paper turning frame was also set up so archers could check their equipment set up and receive advice on adjustments that may help with their set up. A bow setup station gave opportunity for checking equipment and help was given on issues such as limb alignment, pressure button and arrow rest settings.
String making and arrow repair & maintenance were also on offer with archers able to learn the techniques of making an endless loop or flemish twist string, add a serving and nock points, and how to fletch an arrow and replace a broken nock.
Advice was also given on goal setting and competition planning, with handouts to take away.
There was a great atmosphere and a constant buzz of busy people. In fact we were all so busy that we forgot to take photos! The day was very well received with many positive comments from both archers and coaches about the experience.
One comment I overheard, as 2 archers chatted, sums it up best, I think.
‘The best £10 I have ever spent!’
Many thanks to our County Coach Officer, Ian Norwood, for organising a great event.

Introducing our President

Hi there, I’m Kath Hall, your DNAA President.

I have been involved in archery for over 50 years and a member of Killingworth Archers since 1975.

I shoot recurve – though have dabbled with longbow on occasion!! I competed at target competitions all over the country for many years and have been proud to be a member of the DNAA team on many occasions. I don’t compete in many target competitions now, but my love of the sport is still as strong as the first time I picked a bow up and shot my first arrow all those years ago.

I have tried and enjoyed most forms of archery, Target, Flight and Field, but my passion is Clout. If you haven’t tried it yet, you should, it’s such a relaxed and friendly discipline.

I’m a Level 2 Coach and enjoy introducing new people to the sport and helping them to achieve their ambitions. For a number of years I was County Coaching Officer, arranging many Coach training courses to provide clubs with the coaches which are so important to help clubs grow and attract new members.

I have been tournament organiser for Killingworth Archers for over 40 years and have also organised numerous tournamentsfor the county – Indoor, Outdoor and Clout Championships, FITA Stars, 3 Corner (Pentangle) Grand Northern and Regional Indoor.

Circumstances have prevented my attendance at local tournaments over the last year year, but hopefully this year, I will try to attend as many competitions as I can – perhaps even shooting occasionally!!

If you see me, come and say hello and have a chat.
